The United States military is adopting new technologies with blistering frequency in order to maintain its status as one of the most sophisticated fighting forces in the world. Here are some of the most noteworthy technology trends in the U.S. military.
According to the Department of Defense, the U.S. military expects to have battle-ready hypersonic missiles by 2023. Hypersonic missiles are projectiles that can reach or exceed Mach 5. Projectiles that can travel this fast are moving at five times the speed of sound. Currently, there are no defense systems capable of stopping hypersonic missile systems once they are in flight.
The term “Internet of Military Things” refers to a variety of internet-connected devices that can be used by soldiers on the front lines. These advanced pieces of equipment can collect important biometric data, analyze battlefield conditions, and facilitate the strategic deployment of military assets. IoMT devices will allow for seamless data sharing across the entire fighting force.
The success of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to a surge in demand for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).
In response, Huntington Ingalls Industries, one of the nation’s largest shipbuilders, constructed a massive unmanned vehicle production facility in Hampton, Virginia. Unmanned vehicles are appealing because they can perform mission-critical tasks without endangering the lives of U.S. military personnel.
Virtual reality training has long been a part of the U.S. military’s development programs. However, VR training is also being used to prepare military personnel to transition into civilian life. For instance, the National Association of Manufacturers has begun to provide veterans with virtual reality training that will equip them with sought-after manufacturing skills.
Increasing digitization by militaries around the world has made cyber warfare a key concern for the U.S. armed forces. The U.S. military is not only developing ways to guard against cyberattacks, but it is also working to enhance its own cyber warfare capabilities. Offensive cyber warfare tactics that it is adopting include delivering ransomware to enemy networks and launching malware attacks.
In the coming years, expect these trends to forever change the U.S. military and the role of soldiers in both combat and non-combat environments.
