Vision Technologies founder John Shetrone retires – Baltimore Business Journal – The Business Journals

John Lee Shetrone Jr., who founded Vision Technologies from a room above his garage and grew it into a $153 million company, has retired after more than two decades at the helm of the Glen Burnie IT firm.
Shetrone, a service-disabled veteran, has more than three decades in the IT and telecommunications sector, having founded two other companies before starting Vision in 2000. Today, Vision has more than 600 employees in 25 states and did $153.1 million in revenue last year, according to a release from the company this week. The company is on track to exceed $200 million in revenue over the next few years. Vision is among the 50 largest private companies in Greater Baltimore, according to Baltimore Business Journal research.
President Kevin Nolan will lead the company going forward.
Shetrone’s retirement earlier this month follows two significant milestones for the company in recent years. In 2020, Vision moved into a new 57,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in Glen Burnie after outgrowing its old facility. The company also earlier this year won the largest contract award in its history: a subcontract under prime contractor Leidos to provide information technology and communications services for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The contract as a whole is worth about $2.5 billion and could extend as far as 2031, according to the release.
Beyond his work at Vision, Shetrone has also served on a number of boards during his career, including the Maryland Technology Development Corp. (TEDCO), the Chesapeake Innovation Center and the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. In early 2020, Vision also established the Anne Arundel Community College John L. Shetrone Jr. Scholarship to support local students and by the end of the year, the company will have donated an estimated $550,000 to various organizations nationwide since its founding.
“From the start we wanted to build a company that was unique and different, one that would differentiate the company in the market, and provide our customers and teammates with one company that could service a wide range of IP Centric Technologies and provide our teammates with opportunities for growth,” Shetrone said in a statement. “As I reflect over my life at Vision, I am so proud of my partners and our team for what we have accomplished together. Our tag line of ‘Making Vision Reality’ has always been about making vision reality for our customers and for my teammates. I am proud to have watched so many people grow with me over the course of our careers.”
