New York seeks to award USD 30m to advance future grid technologies – Renewables Now
August 18 (Renewables Now) – The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) on Wednesday opened the third round of the Future Grid Challenge, offering up to USD 30 million (EUR 29.5m) to support solutions facilitating renewables grid integration.
Individual projects can get up to USD 3 million to study, develop or demonstrate technologies that contribute to transmission and distribution modernisation. The initiative is in line with New York’s target of 70% renewable electricity by 2030.
The solicitation, which will run till November 2, is aimed at a range of technologies — power flow control devices; energy storage for transmission and distribution services; tools for improving operator situational awareness; transformer monitoring; advanced high-temperature, low sag conductors; compact tower design; distribution energy management systems (DERMS); and grid impacts from offshore wind interconnection.
The Future Grid Challenge is part of NYSERDA’s Smart Grid Programme, which has awarded about USD 57 million since 2016.
“Investments in innovation are investments in a grid of the future that incorporates clean energy and allows for dynamic management and operation to ensure resilient and reliable transmission and distribution, even when factoring in the impacts of climate change,” said NYSERDA head Doreen M Harris.
The news comes a day after NYSERDA launched the third solicitation under a programme through which it seeks to procure Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from wind and hydropower generation capacity.
