Deeptech Labs was named hottest accelerator at the Europas 2022 Technology Start-up Awards in Lisbon.
A number of Cambridge companies earned plaudits despite missing out on actual honours; Cambridge Gan Devices (CGD), Speechmatics, Sano Genetics and IQ Capital were all shortlisted.
CGD is a fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops, and commercialises energy-efficient GaN-based power devices.
Speechmatics develops automatic speech recognition software based on recurrent neural networks and statistical language modelling.
Sano Genetics is already matching thousands of people and their genetic data with research projects in the UK and Europe. In addition to offering DTC sequencing kits, customers can upload their genetic data from other sources to the Sano Genetics platform.
IQ Capital supplies crucial capital to DeepTech companies and is one of the UK’s most important investment vehicles.
Deeptech Labs alumni, Nick Fellingham, CEO at Condense Reality, accepted the award for Deeptech Labs as CEO Miles Kirby was unable to attend. Kirby said later: “To be recognised in this category amongst so many innovative accelerators is a testament to our talented team and the unwavering support from our partners Arm, University of Cambridge, Cambridge Innovation Capital, Martlet, Ewan Kirk and our community of deeptech investors and advisers.
“Deeptech Labs continues to win recognition for our unique methodology, deeptech domain expertise and our ambition to accelerate the European deeptech industry.
“The team and I are continually innovating our model to help early-stage deeptech founders stay ahead in an increasingly competitive landscape while also solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.”
Founded in 2009 by Mike Butcher, editor-at-large at Techcrunch, The Europas was formed to recognise and celebrate the innovation emerging from Europe’s burgeoning tech startup scene.
• Bristol-based Condense Reality won the best Web3 Start-up award at the Europas 2022. The company was part of the Deeptech Labs’ autumn 2021 cohort of startups. Condense uses computer vision and machine learning to live broadcast volumetric (full 3D) video into game engines. This allows partners in sport and entertainment to hold live concerts and sporting events inside any game, VR or AR application created using Unity or Unreal Engine.
