WINONA LAKE, Ind. – In a marquee Top-25 matchup, Grace’s men’s basketball team took down No. 22 Oregon Tech 82-77 on Friday.
The No. 8 Lancers (4-0) and Owls battled fiercely for all 40 minutes. Frankie Davidson led all players with 25 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in a strong performance.
The game wrapped up the first day of the inaugural Crossroads/Cascade Classic. The unique tournament features a pair of teams from the Crossroads League and the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
The Lancers benefitted from a packed house at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center, which created a loud, energetic atmosphere for the Top-25 tilt.
Grace jumped out to a fast start in front of that crowd, hitting its first eight field goals. The Owls kept within range, however, and only trailed 18-11 after Grace’s shooting spree.
The Lancers pushed their lead to 10 after a fastbreak layup from Jakob Gibbs made the score 26-16.
But OIT refused to fade. The Owls used an 8-0 run to slash Grace’s lead down to two.
Grace again earned a double-digit lead in the half after a dunk from Elijah Malone and a layup from Frankie Davidson.
The Owls continued to chip away, however, but Grace still held a 42-38 lead at halftime.
Grace shot a sizzling 58 percent from the floor in the half. Davidson scored 13 points, Ian Scott had 10, and Jakob Gibbs added nine.
The Owls also shot well at 50 percent, and they had three fewer turnovers than Grace.
Oregon Tech began the second half well, charging ahead 45-44 after a corner 3-pointer. The Owls increased their lead to five at 53-48 after another triple.
Grace began to pull back in front, using its defense to generate offense. Carter Stoltzfus stole the ball two plays in a row, leading to four straight points from Cade Gibbs.
Back-to-back buckets from Jakob Gibbs and Davidson gave Grace a four-point lead at 64-60 with 7:11 remaining.
Two minutes later, fastbreak layups from Scott and Jakob Gibbs propelled the Lancers to a 68-61 advantage.
Davidson then threw down a monster slam dunk with four minutes to play, and he added three more points to put the Owls into a 12-point hole with 3:14 on the clock.
The Owls drilled a trio of 3-pointers over the final three minutes to keep OIT within striking distance.
But the Lancers made enough free throws to close out the victory.
Davidson’s game-high 25 points came on 10 of 15 shooting. Scott poured in 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, and Jakob Gibbs tallied 18 points, 5 boards, 2 assists and 1 steals.
Cade Gibbs notched 13 points and four rebounds, Brycen Graber had five assists, and Carter Stoltzfus added 3 assists, 3 boards and 2 steals.
Grace finished the game shooting 54 percent from the floor, and OIT shot 46 percent. The Lancers had a plus-eight advantage on the boards as well.
The Lancers will wrap up the Crossroads/Cascade Classic on Saturday with a 5 p.m. matchup against Bushnell.
