Computer Experts Offer Online Shopping Safety Tips – KNSI

(KNSI) — Many people across central Minnesota will let their fingers do the shopping as Black Friday deals are often released online, and Cyber Monday is on the horizon.
With so much shopping and commerce online, we asked some computer experts how to stay safe this season. Vice President of Business Development for Net V Pro Keith Swingle says he has two suggestions. One is to make sure to manage the passwords for your credit cards. “That can be as simple as just making a change to the passwords after the holiday season. The other is setting up your card, so you get notified when a transaction occurs. This can be a little bit on the annoying side, but it’s a great tool.”
He says to make sure the website you are buying from is secure. “Just take a look up there at the URL and make sure that it says HTTPS. That S means secure. So that’s an encrypted transaction if the website just has an HTTP on it, not secure.”
Also, make sure your security software is up to date, don’t shop on public wifi and beware of deals that sound too good to be true – especially on social media.
