BlackBerry shares jump on CES news of automotive technologies … – Morningstar

BlackBerry announces a variety of car-focused partnerships at the CES tech show in Las Vegas
BlackBerry Ltd. has announced a host of automotive-focused partnerships at the the CES tech event in Las Vegas this week.
Among the deals unveiled at CES, BlackBerry (BB.T) confirmed that IVY, its automotive artificial-intelligence platform co-developed with Amazon.com Inc.’s (AMZN) Amazon Web Services, is now pre-integrated into three commercially available digital-cockpit platforms from Bosch Ltd. and Pateo. The three implementations are on show at CES, marking the first time that BlackBerry’s IVY has been exhibited publicly in a vehicle. BlackBerry also announced its first IVY design win at CES, with Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor selecting an IVY-powered Pateo digital cockpit for its Voyah H97 electric car.
BlackBerry’s stock jumped 7.9% on Wednesday, while the S&P 500 fell 1.1%.

Also at CES, BlackBerry and Garmin Ltd. (GRMN) announced that BlackBerry’s QNX technology is being used for an Android Automotive-based proof-of-concept demonstration at CES. Garmin’s Unified Cabin brings together multiple domains, touchscreens and wireless devices on a single system on a chip (SoC), the companies said. "We are excited to again collaborate with BlackBerry QNX to bring together multiple operating systems onto a single SoC used in Garmin’s Unified Cabin," said Craig Puder, vice president of Garmin Automotive OEM engineering, in a statement.
Automotive technology company Marelli is also using BlackBerry’s QNX Acoustics Management Platform as part of its in-car audio technology. Marelli will use QNX AMP and QNX Hypervisor to increase voice-command accuracy and reduce echo and background noise in order to improve hands-free communications in the car, according to BlackBerry.
Among its flurry of announcements, BlackBerry also introduced QNX Accelerate, an initiative that makes the cloud-enabled version of the company’s QNX Neutrino Real Time Operating System and QNX OS for Safety available in AWS Marketplace. BlackBerry also announced a collaboration with Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) to launch an online training academy. The QNX Academy for Functional Safety aims to boost innovation among software developers.
