Micah Davis’ line-drive single to right field drove in his brother Simon with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning sending Fredonia to a 5-4 walk-off victory over Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 rival Southwestern on Wednesday.
Fredonia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Owen Rush followed Simon Davis’ double and Gabe Schrader’s single with a two-run double to deep right-center field.
The home team doubled its lead in the third inning. Simon Davis got things going again with a single to left field and promptly stole second base. Davis scored when a Rush groundball was mishandled. Rush moved to third on a Micah Davis single to right field and scored when he and Micah Davis executed a double-steal.
Southwestern got on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Dustin Hendrix singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Lucas Gilbert two-out RBI single to center.
In the sixth, Aiden Kennedy doubled to deep center field and scored on a Spencer Kane two-out RBI single.
Southwestern completed its comeback in the seventh inning. Cam Lemk and Kenyon Davidson each pinch-hit and reached base to start the inning, on a walk and a single, respectively. A Judd Harris sacrifice bunt was thrown away, scoring Lemk and sending Davidson to third. Max Marshall’s attempted squeeze bunt led to a passed ball and Davidson scored to tie the game.
Both teams went down in order in the eighth.
In the ninth, Southwestern got its first two batters on base, but the first was erased as Gabe Schrader picked him off of second base. Schrader then struck out the next two Southwestern hitters to end the threat.
In the bottom half, Simon Davis doubled and Schrader walked to lead things off. The next batter popped out before Micah Davis sent everyone home with his clutch hit to right.
For Southwestern, Kennedy threw four innings and struck out nine while allowing three earned runs. Harris followed with five innings of relief, striking out three and allowing only one earned run.
For Fredonia, Owen Ludwig threw seven complete innings with 10 strikeouts. Schrader picked up the win in relief, throwing two innings and striking out four.
