Bowdoin College student dies from severe peanut allergy
A 2022 graduate of Lewiston High School, Omar Osman, died suddenly on Saturday. Osman had a severe allergy to peanuts. After an unexpected exposure, he died on the way to the hospital.
Lewiston High School students were dismissed early today. A prayer and burial service was held for Osman at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn this afternoon, followed by a memorial at an Islamic center in Lewiston. Osman was a devout Muslim.
As the former school committee representative, Lewiston superintendent Jake Langlais says he knew Osman well. Langlais says “he was the leader of our robotics team, he was certified with advanced technology and cyber security in our CTE program he was a joy to have in every classroom.” Osman had earned a full ride to Bowdoin College in the computer science field. He died in his freshman year.
Langlais says the last time he spoke to Osman was over the summer about returning and mentoring students. After speaking with the family, Langlais says “they appreciate the time they did had with him, and that God put him here and God needs him somewhere else. I just can’t imagine what they’re going through.”
