There was a time when animation industry was considered an offbeat career option with limited opportunities. But, with the expansion of the media industry and its convergence with other industries, the animation industry too has received a massive boost. A recent media and entertainment industry report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), highlighted that the Indian animation and visual effects industry has the potential to touch 20-25% by 2025 from the existing 10% of the global market share. Government is also heavily supporting the industry and the recently announced promotion task force for the AVGC sector is a marquee move to strengthen domestic capacity for serving our markets and the global demand.
The rise of OTT has also influenced the animation industry with a sudden spike in viewership, especially for children’s content. Moving from its Hollywood-centric image, the animation industry is undergoing a sea change across the globe. Greater interest in and awareness about the industry has brought attention to the key tools used by animators and graphics creators. With the advent of new technologies and taking inspiration from a few Indian success stories, the Year 2023 is all set to take Indian Animation to newer heights, says Charuvi Agrawal-Internationally acclaimed animation filmmaker, ace Indian multi-media artist, and the Founder of Charuvi Design Labs (CDL). Keeping that in mind, here’s a list of top tech trends that will rule the industry in 2023.
Motion Capture
Motion Capture is a technology that allows one to record the movement of objects or people digitally. It is used as an animation technique to recreate an accurate digital playback of real action. This collaborative technique allows the merging of real movement with technology to create a digital equivalent that can then be touched up, almost like make-up. The motion capture market is segmented into optical motion capture systems and non-optical motion capture systems. The optical motion capture systems is further segmented into active 3D motion capture systems, passive motion capture systems, markerless motion capture systems, and underwater motion capture systems. The passive 3D motion capture systems based on depth sensing is segmented into the time of flight and structured light. The non-optical motion capture systems segment is further divided into mechanical 3D motion capture systems, inertial motion capture systems and electromagnetic 3D motion capture systems.
This technique has been widely used in popular films franchises like Marvel, Avatar, the Jungle Book, and the Lord of the Rings, among others. The upcoming Avatar 2 which will feature a lot of underwater sequences has taken motion capture to the next level with the use of a never before seen underwater motion capture technology.
Unreal
Unreal allows creation of cutting-edge animation at a fast pace without compromising on the quality of the content. Fast rendering can sometimes affect image quality but it is exactly this concern that Unreal manages to resolve effectively. Apart from helping save time, this tools also allows creators to include creative changes that may come up at a later stage while ensuring there are no delays. There is an in-built tool box that allows one to bring to life any imaginable scenario or looks thereby expanding the range of available creative options.
Unity
Unity allows making edits in real-time and helps speed up the creator workflow. Traditional rendering makes the animation process time-taking and Unity allows several non-creative tasks to be automated and comes with smart decision-making abilities, all of which contribute towards a faster workflow. Easy use and prototyping are among the strengths of this tool.
Houdini
Houdini is another popular 3D animation tool which allows several functions such as modelling, lighting, rendering, compositing, plugin development and volumetric under one umbrella. This tool has been employed in popular Disney movies Frozen and Zootopia, among others. The basic unit of Houdini’s architecture is operators and asset construction takes place by connecting sequences of operators.
Virtual Production
Virtual production allows real-world and digital platforms to converge using a game engine to create virtual sets and environments during filmmaking. Virtual production allows for more flexibility and creativity in filmmaking, as it eliminates the need for physically building every set or flying crew to physical locations. It also allows for some of the filmmaking processes to take place virtually, allowing people to work remotely.
Machine learning and artificial intelligence
Machine learning and AI technologies are being used in a variety of ways in the animation industry, from automating tasks to creating more realistic simulations. These technologies are likely to continue to advance and become more integrated into the animation process in the coming years.
D5 Render
D5 Render is another popular tool that is popular among the architecture, engineering and construction industry. The principle employed in this tool is ray tracing, a technique based on the light transport theory. Ray tracing allows creation of multiple optical effects such as reflection, refraction, soft shadows animation blur, among others. D5 is based on the Unreal engine and de-noise technology which helps maximize the performance of RTX graphic cards.
Most of these tools and technologies have been in the industry over years but every now and then, certain tools come into prominence and become the talk of the town. Given that the use of animation tools has gone beyond just film and TV and nearly all brands with a social media presence are investing in some graphic tools, the market is only likely to boom further.
